Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) intervenes in uMzinyathi District Municipality

On Tuesday, 7 May 2013, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Ms Nomusa Dube, met the full council of the ailing uMzinyathi District Municipality, to officially announce a discretionary intervention.

This follows the assessment of the finances of the municipality by the department, in terms of section 131(2)(a) of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), which highlighted several financial areas of concern. A number of institutional issues that impact on the performance and financial position of the municipality were also identified.

A support team, including officials from COGTA and the Provincial Treasury, will be deployed to uMzinyathi in order to effect a financial turnaround at the municipality.
