COGTA MEC condemns Easter murder of KZN Councillor

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has condemned the brutal murder of  councilor Neliswa Nzuza of the Indaka local municipality in a place of worship during the Easter festivities.

According to reports the councillor was stabbed to death in full view of congregants who attended the church service allegedly by her husband.
“The death of a councillor who is an elected servant of the people leaves a gaping void in the sphere of local government and has robbed us of one more foot soldier in our fight against poverty, inequality and unemployment,” said KZN MEC for COGTA Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

"It appears that this tragedy which cast a shadow over Easter festivities in the community of Indaka was prompted by domestic violence which the provincial government condemns with equal force," Dube-Ncube added.

“On behalf of all stakeholders in the provincial government and the entire local governance fraternity we extend heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, the wider community of Indaka as well as the political organisation - Inkatha Freedom Party - from which the murdered councillor hailed,” said Dube-Ncube.

"It is incidents such as this heinous crime that remind us that domestic violence remains a grave challenge in our communities and as a government that is committed to social cohesion, we have to ensure that our people live in harmony," said Dube-Ncube.

KZN COGTA is urging the law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrator of this violent incident is brought to justice and that calm is restored in the community of Indaka whose Easter festivities have been marred by this tragedy.
