Elections of members of local houses proceeding smoothly

The process to elect new members of the Local Houses of Traditional Leaders (LHTL) has started in all six (6) Electoral Colleges of the Eastern Cape Province. The process is expected to be completed today with seventy seven (77) members across the Province. The newly elected members of the LHTL will be sworn in by District Magistrates on 20 September 2017 in their respective areas.

The process will then be followed by the nomination of thirty eight (38) members to the Eastern Cape Provincial House of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL), who will then be inaugurated on 26 September 2017 in Bhisho. The event will be officiated by the Judge President of the Eastern Cape High Court. The Provincial House will also be expected to nominate three (3) people to represent the Province in the National House of Traditional Leaders in Cape Town.

“We now have a credible Voters Roll in place hence we expect a free and fair election process. I have been made aware that all Electoral Collages have been opened and are functional with incident reported. The official results of the elections will be announced tomorrow,” said Cogta MEC Fikile Xasa.
