KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu criticises the high number of deaths on KZN roads over the weekend. Ten people lost their lives in road accidents this weekend, due to human error and driver negligence. On the M4 South bound near Clairwood off-ramp the driver of a bakkie lost control and the bakkie overturned, the driver was driving over the legal speed limit.
On the Edendale road there was a head-on collision between an Opel Corsa and a Ford Sierra station wagon, this accident claimed four lives. While on the N2 North bound Amanzimtoti the driver of a bakkie lost control as a result of driving over the legal speed limit, four people died. On P609 near Wimpy, in Kokstad two light motor vehicles collided head on, it is alleged that drinking and driving was the cause of this accident, one person died, one is in a critical condition and one sustained minor injuries.
In another accident on the N3 South Bound, Townhill two heavy motor vehicles were involved in a rear end collision. Two people sustained minor injuries and one was treated for shock. The MEC has expressed his disappointment with those road users who do not obey the rules of road and by so doing put the lives of other road users in jeopardy.
Despite numerous requests by the Department of Transport for people not to use
bakkies as means of public transportation, people are continuing to ignore the call from the Department, hence we experienced the accident like the one that occurred in Amanzimtoti. "I am warning all motorists that negligence will not be tolerated on our roads. All those who break the rules of the road will face the full might of the law," said Mchunu.
