The Amajuba District of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Sport and Recreation won a bronze medal at the KZN Premier’s Service Excellence Awards on July 23. The award was conferred at the glittering event, held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban.
The Awards are aimed at instilling the principles of Batho Pele (Putting People First) in the public service and honouring those departments and government employees who have gone an extra mile. Winning for the third year in a row, Amajuba District is responsible for providing support and promoting sporting services in the region.
The big winners were Umkhanyakude Region of the Department of Public Works. The closest contenders, the Department of Community Safety and Liaison (Uthungulu District Team) and the Department of Health (Mosvold Hospital Ngwavuma) received certificates of commendation for their efforts. Silver Awards winners included the eThekwini Municipality (Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture), KZN Provincial Treasury (Internal Audit Services), and the Department of Education (Pinetown District Office).
Other Bronze Awards went to the Department of Arts and Culture (Southern Region), Department of Transport (Pietermaritzburg Cost Centre), Department of Social Development (KwaMaphumulo), Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Affairs (Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith).
In his address, Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize said the awards provided the leverage needed to move public servants from the then prevailing bureaucratic culture of an inward focus and red tape, to an external focus on customers and their needs as central to everything the government does.
