Acting Premier Ravi Pillay calls on KwaZulu-Natal communities to form a united front to combat gender-based violence

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Premier calls for a united front against gender-based violence, condemns the torching of trucks

The Acting Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Ravi Pillay, has called on all people of KwaZulu-Natal to form a united front to combat gender-based violence. He was reacting to reports of crimes against women and children, including rape, murder and kidnappings.

“The provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal is deeply saddened by these crimes. This scourge enjoins all of us to play our part to ensure that we put a stop to these dastardly acts. It is our collective responsibility to work together to put a stop to these crimes targeting women and girls who are among the most vulnerable members of society.”

The acting KZN Premier further expressed concerns about incidents where trucks were torched in various parts of the province this week. Mr Pillay warned that these attacks do not augur well for the image of the province and pose a threat to the economy of both the country and the province.

“Today Statistics SA released encouraging economic data for the second quarter of the year. The data shows that the South African economy grew by 3.1%  in the second quarter of 2019. These are positive signs which should be celebrated but this celebration will be short-lived if the attacks on trucks and other related criminal acts continue as they pose a direct threat to the economy. As the provincial government we will continue to work with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders in the freight industry to put a stop to this,” he concluded.

Pillay said the provincial executive is determined to achieve a peaceful, stable and economically prosperous province of KwaZulu-Natal.
