The MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will tomorrow join partners in celebrating the one millionth patient who received eye examination and care through the partnership between the department, International Centre for Eyecare Education (ICEE), Standard Chartered Bank and Optometry Giving Sight.
A gala dinner will be held at Didima Camp (Cathedral Peak), Drakensberg on Thursday, 7 July 2011 at 18h30. The event will be to review programme implementation, strategise for the future as well as to celebrate the one million patients attended.
The programme was implemented in a number of public health facilities and saw the training of nurses (940) to provide primary eye care services. During the course of the programme children of all ages received access to basic eye examination at their local clinic where there were previously no services due to insufficiently trained personnel and/or equipment.
Accommodation has been arranged (but no transport) for journalists, kindly RSVP with: chris.maxon@kznhealth.gov.za.
