The Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, accompanied by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will officially open two clinics in Mhlabuyalingana to promote the provision of family planning services to young girls.
Presenting the State of the National Address His Excellency President Zuma said; “Given our emphasis on women’s health, we will broaden the scope of reproductive health rights and provide services related to amongst others, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, teenage pregnancy and sanitary towels for the indigent.”
Addressing the National Nurses Summit in Sandton, Minister Motsoaledi emphasised the need for nurses and the department to work together and return reproductive and sexuality education in schools.
“We better have few nurses in hospitals and more in the schools educating young girls about family planning. If you wait for them to come to clinics and hospitals, they will overwhelm you,” said Dr Motsoaledi.
The department believes that Primary Healthcare needs to understand what the teenagers health needs are and how best to reach them to encourage responsible sexual behaviour and help them protect and promote their sexual and reproductive health.
