MEC Thusi to honour Chief Albert Luthuli and Inkosi Bhambatha through sports facilities

Impoverished areas of KwaZulu-Natal will benefit from multi-million sports complexes that will be unrolled by the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Mrs Weziwe Thusi.

As from the 2 November 2010, MEC Thusi will set off a campaign to roll out developmental programmes that will see the construction of state of the art sports complexes throughout the hinterlands of the province. These will include two sports complexes in KwaDukuza in honour of first black Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chief Albert Luthuli and another in Msinga in honour of Inkosi Bhambatha, kaMancinza, whose resistance to repressive laws influenced the struggle for liberation.

The complexes will comprise fields catering for netball, volleyball, basketball, change rooms, public ablution facilities and palisade fencing. A total of R12 million will be invested in these facilities.

The projects will be launched at KwaDukuza/Ntshawini, Othuthwini/Umzumbe and at Ngome/Msinga under Mvoti Municipality. These will be followed by a handover of the completed basic sports complex at KwaDukuza/Thembeni.

MEC Thusi believes the launch of these projects will help address socio-economic challenges within areas that stand to benefit.

“Provision of sports facilities is a key service delivery initiative of this department, providing opportunities for sports development, job creation and sustainable community infrastructure. Through these projects, we will be able to impart skills to people so that, even when the construction process is over, they will be able to utilise their skills elsewhere to earn a livelihood. Locals, particularly young people, will benefit immensely as they will not spend time idling around, leading them to get into all sorts of anti-social behaviour,” said MEC Thusi.
