MEC Mchunu to officiate the sod-turning of Malangeni Bridge that was destroyed by floods in South Coast

MEC for Transport, community safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu will on Tuesday, 22 March 2011 officiate the sod-turning of Malangeni Bridge in South Coast under uMdoni and Vulamehlo Municipalities after it was washed away by the floods in June 2008.

Preliminary reports reveal that heavy rains were experienced in June 2008, as much as 500mm in some places, that fell for over two days causing disastrous flooding along a 40 km wide strip of the coastal region of KwaZulu-Natal.

This resulted in severe damage to infrastructure in both urban and rural areas and caused disruption of essential services and hardship to thousands of people. The construction of this access bridge will serve the Esperanza and Sezela communities by providing access from Umzinto to the N2 Freeway. This project entails the construction of a 4 cell 3.6 x 3.6 metre concrete box culvert at km 45.00, including the construction of speed humps at Khuphula School, Malangeni.

The total estimated budget required for this project is R10 million and has been prioritised for construction in the 2011/12 financial year. It is anticipated that the project will commence by April 2011 and be completed by October 2011 with a contract period of seven months.
