KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Willies Mchunu invites various stakeholders from the public transport sector to a public transport passengers association three-day summit (8 to 10 April 2011) in Pietermaritzburg at the Royal Show Grounds with the aim of addressing challenges and coming up with solutions within the industry in a passenger’s point of view.
One of the core mandates of the department is to regulate, manage and provide public transport services that is safe, accessible, affordable, reliable, and effective and that is responsive to provincial developmental needs. The department established the Public Transport Passenger Associations (PTPA) in 2006 and 2007 to ensure maximum participation of passengers in the provision of public transport services and related matters in the province.
The passengers are seen as critical role players that will give meaningful input and secure their interest in the entire public transport provision value chain. The organised Public Transport service providers are now able to engage with passengers in a formal and organised way so as to ensure that common values and objectives are identified for mutual benefit of operators and passengers and ultimately for the general good of our economy.
