MEC for Health to unveil America's contribution to quality healthcare in KwaZulu-Natal

The MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will unveil a multi million rand contribution of Americans, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Release (PEPFAR) and BroadReach Health Care, to the rural people in the south of Durban, Ugu District towards improving quality of healthcare.

“On this day we will celebrate a long standing partnership with the United States government that has seen ten Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities being adequately equipped. Their contribution will place the district PHC facilities on track of realising our goal of high quality, caring health services for the citizens and in respond to the health care needs of the benefitting communities. It will professionalise to the delivery of integrated HIV and AIDS/TB services” says the Head of Department, Dr Sibongile Zungu.

In September 2008, the department identified 11 infrastructural projects to BroadReach Healthcare with a view to enhance the space capacities at the identified facilities in order to be able to manage current and future needs, manage down referral and prepare for the envisaged PHC initiated Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and related interventions. In August 2009, the department approached BroadReach to equip, furnish and provide educational materials in the new extensions.

The projects took 16 months to complete and the MEC, together with the US Consul General, Ms Jill Derderian; BroadReach Chairman and Co-founder, Dr Ernest Darkoh as well as other dignitaries will officiate at the function to be held as follows:
