The MEC for Health in KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will present his second budget policy statement to the provincial legislature on 22 April 2010.
Public health services are concerned with the health of the public at the population level and include a wide range of activities and services aimed at the whole population, although sometimes delivered to the individual. Investing in health is investing in human development, social well being and general wealth of the province. Better health improves welfare and health investments create wealth.
The MEC's budget policy statement will address, among others, the following key issues:
* Changing the picture of maternal child and women's health services to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates
* Progress in the prevention, management and treatment of HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STI) and tuberculosis (TB) including multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) TB
* Progress report on the financial turnaround strategy implemented by the department since its announcement in September 2009 and the fight against corruption and fraud
* The devastation of tuberculosis on health workers
* Quality of care improvement
* Human resource development
