On Saturday, 19 September, the MEC for Health will visit the area of kwaNxamalala to address iNkosi and his council about service delivery at the local clinic.
This follows a tragedy that befell a family who had gone to the local clinic to seek maternity care but found the clinic closed because the nursing sister had attended to family bereavement. While the parents of the pregnant woman accompanied her to the nearest clinic they were met with an accident in which both parents passed away. When the expecting mother reached the clinic she gave birth to a still born.
The MEC will be meeting the community and iNkosi to address the availability of health care in the area, as well as other problems that the community is aggrieved of. The MEC will contribute towards the burial of the departed. He will also announce corrective measures to be put in place so that such a tragedy does not happen again.
This is part of government’s commitment to develop a social compact through a discussion with different stakeholders, for example; government, service providers, employers, communities, employees, organised labour, health professional bodies and private health sector to get commitment to higher level of performance to achieve specific health targets and, in particular, the millennium development goals. This should result in a health social compact to guarantee people of KwaZulu-Natal the best possible health services our province can offer.
