MEC Dhlomo to tell Sibaya Casino employees that a healthy lifestyle workplace programme improves productivity and social cohesion

The MEC for Health Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo in collaboration with the Durban Stars’ Phindane Nene will be visiting Sibaya Casino to address to encourage workers and management to implement a workplace healthy lifestyle programme for improving productivity and social cohesion.

Journalists are invited to the address by MEC Dhlomo to take place at Sibaya Casino on Tuesday, 1 November 2011 at 15h00.

Health is a significant employment issue. Workplace injury and disease is estimated to cost over millions of rands per year nationally. Previous studies have shown that 42% of men and half of all South African women are currently inactive while only 36% of men and 24% of women participate in sufficient physical activity to derive health benefits.

MEC Dhlomo is championing the adoption of healthy and active lifestyles in the workplace and recently launched a workplace programme at King Edward VIII Hospital where he encourages health workers to make time to exercise. He has addressed a number of workplaces where he urges the corporate world to implement healthy and active lifestyle programmes.

The MEC believes that Promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace makes good business sense. It contributes to happier, healthier and more productive employees and reduces business costs associated with illness, injury and absenteeism.
