The MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, will receive the Cuban delegation that is in the country for the Joint Academic Meeting and 15th anniversary celebrations of the South Africa – Cuba Health Agreement which has produced two hundred and eighty two (282) medical doctors.

Journalists are invited to the reception dinner will be held at Elangeni Hotel (Durban) today (Monday 11 July 2011) at 17h00 and will be attended by the speaker of eThekwini Municipality, senior government officials and the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Health in Cuba Prof Jorge Gonzalez Perez.

The Cuban delegation is in the country to meet with their counterparts to discuss the training of doctors, share experiences and best practices as well as to celebrate the 15 years of cooperation in health.

The 15th anniversary of health sector cooperation between Cuba and South Africa is a significant milestone because Cuba is a longstanding ally of South Africa. The two countries share bonds of solidarity forged during the war against apartheid. The MEC believes that the bonds are cemented by the blood of heroic Cuban soldiers who died in combat in Africa, who paid the supreme sacrifice for their belief in anti-imperialism, freedom and justice.
