The road to the International Conference of Midwives starts today when the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, leads a walk of midwives through Durban today.
The walk is one of many worldwide walks that are the first steps along what International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) calls the 'Road to Durban,' in the lead-up to the 29th Triennial Congress of the ICM. This Congress, which will take place 19 to 23 June 2011 in Durban, South Africa, and will bring together more than 1 000 midwives from over 60 countries.
The congress aims to raise awareness of the need for more midwives especially where the highest burden of maternal and newborn mortality is greatly felt and to highlight the role of midwives in reaching Millennium Development Goals four and five.
