MEC Cronje initiates financial education for public employees

Studies have shown that financial illiteracy and stress over money can affect productivity in the workplace. It is widely recognised that financial literacy levels in the province and in South Africa are at an unacceptably low levels. The workplace has been proven to be the best venue to reach people for financial education.

Which is why the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance, Ms Ina Cronjé who is the champion of the KZN Financial Literacy Association in partnership with ABSA will on Friday, 27 May 2011, at 9h00 at Sinodale Centre in Pietermaritzburg, launch the Government Employees Literacy Campaign and also officially launch the ABSAs 2011 Government Employees Financial Literacy training which is done at the Public Service Training Academy in Durban.

Financial Literacy among government employees is one of the top priorities of the provincial government. Embracing this launch will be the Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize, who will address more than 300 officials from all salary levels in different departments including all heads of communications, accompanied by the Heads of Departments and the Director-General.

Background:

The KwaZulu-Natal Financial Literacy Association was established on 25 January 2011 under the auspices of KZN Finance MEC Ina Cronjé to address financial literacy in the Province collectively (business, government, regulating bodies and financial institutions).

Five target audiences were identified:

  • Government employees
  • In School Youth
  • Out of School Youth
  • Women and vulnerable groups
  • Small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs)

A group leader for each of these audiences was elected to serve on the steering committee that was established on 18 February 2011.
