KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Finance, Ms Ina Cronjé, will on Tuesday, 16 August 2011 celebrate the Women’s Month with women from all walks of life in one of the oldest township of 500,000 people, in Durban. Recent studies reported that one third of households in KwaMashu have no income and slightly more than one third live in a shack half the population is under 25 and employment was only 28 percent.
It is widely recognised that financial literacy levels in the province and in South Africa are at an unacceptably low levels, which makes it essential to initiate inroads in all spheres on this regard. It is essential to conjure up the financial literacy programmes with the development which is evident in the area which was a hotbed of political violence at the end of apartheid era.
MEC Cronjé will be accompanied by the specialist from Consumer Protection, Agriculture, and Supply Chain Management to encourage KwaMashu women to look after their finances and to start indulging into the savings culture.
