MEC Cele to roll-out 600 volunteers at uThungulu district

KwaZulu Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mr Bheki Cele will launch 600 new volunteers for the Community Safety and Liaison’s Volunteer Social Crime Prevention Project; over 70% of them are females. This event will take place at eSikhawini College Sports Ground in UThungulu District at 09h00 on Tuesday, 28 July 2009.

Volunteer Social Crime Prevention Project (VSCPP) is a community-driven flagship project that was unveiled by the honourable Mr. Bheki Cele last year in 2008. The volunteers were trained by members of the Greater Manchester Police from the United Kingdom, where this volunteer programme has been a success.

The work of volunteers is aimed at enhancing the activities of social law enforcement and crime prevention agencies. These volunteers have been trained in interviewing and statement taking skills, community development and overall community engagement skills. This project has been given the thumbs-up by the Premier Dr. Zweli Mkhize.

Transport will be provided in 19 local municipalities around the following district municipalities; UThungulu, ILembe, UMzinyathi, Sisonke, and Zululand.
The MEC will give a keynote address to both the volunteers and the community at large; he will then hand out certificates. This brings the total numbers of volunteers to 1 850 many of which are unemployed.

“I urge the community to work and co-operate with the VSCPP they have been groomed to be the eyes and ears of the community as well as making KwaZulu-Natal safe and give assurance of good quality security for the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” said Cele.
