On Thursday, 26 April 2012, at 9h00, at Pietermaritzburg City Hall, the legislature will host a congregation of people of different faith traditions in its efforts to broaden participatory democracy in the province. Section 118(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa makes provision for public access to and involvement in Provincial Legislatures. It requires that Provincial Legislatures facilitate public involvement in the legislative and other processes of the legislature and their committees.
Thus, the Interfaith Symposium is one of such mechanisms to encourage the involvement of the people, particularly those of faith in the legislative processes. The Symposium will see the people of faith submitting declaration to the legislature for it to put it forward to its Committees for action. The Symposium will take a form of discussion in which various religious groupings will air their views and make a contribution to the law making processes of the Legislature.
Media is invited to be part of the event.
