Launch of the Nkandla/Mlalazi Rural Development Presidential Initiative

The Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development together with the Nkandla/Mlalazi community cordially invites you to the launch of the Nkandla/Mlalazi Rural Development Presidential Initiative on 3 October 2010 at Mnyakanya High School, Kwanxamalala in Nkandla.

The Nkandla/Mlalazi community started an initiative to develop 550 hectares of land for agricultural activities, particularly food production. This initiative was tabled to the local Amakhosi for their approval and participation. The local leadership embraced and supported the initiative in various positive and empowering methods.

The Nkandla/Mlalazi project initiative seeks to highlight the need to support and increase community participation in agriculture particularly in ensuring food security, job creation, community development and rural development.

The launch will be graced by President Jacob Zuma who will be giving a keynote address as the resident of Nkandla and the patron of the Nkandla/Mlalazi Rural Development Initiative. Other dignitaries will include the Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize and his cabinet, local and international business people and community members.

The launch will also mark the beginning of a private public people partnership on this initiative as there will also be a session of private sector pledges to rural development. Please see the attached draft programme for more information.
