The MEC for Finance, Ms Ina Cronjé, will on Tuesday, 28 July 2009 officially launch the Savings Campaign in a bid to get people of the province to save.
The MEC, who will be accompanied by the both Heads of the provincial Treasury and that of Department of Basic Education as well as senior staff of the two departments will visit KwaPata High at 07h45 and Mthethomusha Primary schools thereafter in Pietermaritzburg with the aim of teaching children and socially disadvantaged young people, about the importance of saving money.
The campaign kick-starts with the visit to schools because of the belief that it is always better to impart knowledge in children as this will help shape their minds and choices in life. This is supported by an isiZulu saying which goes "ugotshwa usemanzi" which means you can teach a person valuable lessons while they are still young.
Each learner will receive a savings box to save money at home and an information pack with all the details on saving. Learners will be encouraged to share the information with their parents or guardians.
The campaign generally seeks to emphasise the importance of saving money, especially now that communities are affected by the global economic meltdown. After the official launch, the campaign will roll indefinitely in a bid to instil a culture of saving in our communities.
