KZN government to host cross border crime summit

In a bid to reduce escalating crime levels across provincial borders, the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) provincial government will host a two-day provincial cross border crime summit in Durban.

The summit seeks to create a platform to share ideas and strategies, in partnership with neighbouring provinces and neighbouring countries on improving security and control of the borders, thus reducing crime levels.

The summit will look at the trends and all forms of criminal activities happening on the borders or using borders.

Delegates from neighbouring countries, Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho will be participating in this summit.

Provinces which are also sharing borders with KwaZulu-Natal, which are Free State, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape will be also making inputs at the summit.

Livestock theft, stolen goods, vehicle theft, human trafficking and drug trafficking are some of the pertinent crimes happening using the borders.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr Zweli Mkhize accompanied by members of the Justice Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCSP) in the province, will officially open the summit.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr Willies Mchunu is expected to present the purpose of the summit and to share with delegate relevant statistics on crimes taking place on KZN borders.

Inputs will also be received from law enforcement agencies from neighbouring countries and neighbouring provinces on forming a strong partnership against crime.
The summit will also break to various commissions to zoom in on different aspects of crimes and come with tangible solutions on how to tackle these.

This summit will run for two days 16 and 17 August 2012 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.
