KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health assesses learners at Nichols Primary School in Pietermaritzburg

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and the Head of Department, Dr Sibongile Zungu will visit Nichol's Primary School in Edendale on 13 October 2009, as part of the department's School Health Campaign.

The School Health Campaign is coordinated by the department in collaboration with the Department of Education and various stakeholders, and it is an extension of the existing School Health Services. Driven by integrated teams the campaign focuses on:
* Screening services which include screening and assessment of oral health, vision, speech and hearing, gross motor assessment, anthropometric assessment, mental health and intentional injuries.
* Checking of road to health cards to identify missed opportunities especially referring to immunisation and vitamin A.
* Health promotion and education which include environmental health, water and sanitation, HIV and AIDS, TB, child abuse, substance abuse, safety and security, teenage pregnancy, healthy lifestyle, nutrition and gardening.

This week long campaign, 12 to 16 October 2009, seeks to strengthen linkages with other stakeholders in taking health services to learners, parents and educators. Two hundred and forty (240) schools are targeted for the week, in all districts throughout the province.

The Honourable MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo and the Head of Department, Dr Sibongile Zungu will participate in the screening and assessment of learners and raise awareness on measles a highly infectious viral disease and Influenza A (H1N1).
