The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal led by MEC, Mr Willies Mchunu intervened to assist with the burial of 11 people who died in a gruesome accident that occurred on the N2 near Mandeni, last Thursday, 11 August 2011.
Reports revealed that the mini bus taxi was travelling from Durban to Ulundi when its left rear tyre came out. It is alleged that the driver lost control and collided with a truck on to the on coming traffic. Nine people died at the scene while two others died at a later stage including a nine month old baby.
Both vehicles were taken for a forensic test which is conducted by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC).
The names of the deceased are as follows:
Ndlovu Mlamuli, Zama Thando Mazibuko, Busisiwe Thabethe, Nombulelo Mbuli, N Zulu, Sthe Mkhize, Sizakele Zulu, Simangele Mpanza, Nontokozo Dlamini, Nomfundo Mbatha, Mandla Phakathi (taxi driver).
Mchunu expressed satisfaction that through the Road Accident Fund, families will be assisted in burying their family members.
MEC Mchunu will host a memorial service in commemoration of the bereaved.

It saddens me to learn that there is a high number of people we loose on our roads everyday in KwaZulu-Natal. We appeal to all motorists to be cautious and to check their vehicles before embarking on long distance trips to avoid such fatalities, said Mchunu.
