Inmates to participate in arts festival

In a bold move give prison inmates a second chance in life, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture, Department of Correctional Services and (NICRO), have organised inmates provincial arts festival.

The festival will see inmates from across correctional centres throughout the province display their artistic talents in different types of art genres such as maskandi, kwaito, hip hop, gospel, isicathamiya etc.  There will also be displays of artwork produced by inmates.

The festival is a result of a rigorous selection procedure that has been taking part at regional levels over the past few months.  The aim of the programme is to afford inmates an opportunity to use arts as a form of escapism from anti-social behaviour. It is also aimed at rehabilitating inmates in order to become responsible citizens when they finish serving their sentences and be able to use the arts to make a living.

The event will be graced by the presence of the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and
Recreation, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, who will deliver a keynote address.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Friday, 29 July 2011
Venue: Westville Correctional Centre sports ground
Time: 09h00am

All media are invited to attend.

NB: Interviews with inmates can be arranged on request.
