Handing over of science kit and official opening of Kwaphungashe Education Centre

KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Speaker Honourable Neliswa Nkonyeni will tomorrow (8 July 2011) handover more than fourty mobile science kits to needy schools in the Ugu District. She will be accompanied by Education MEC Hon Senzo Mchunu.

The handing over of the kits by Nkonyeni will coincide with the official opening of KwaPhungashe Education Centre outside Umzumbe by MEC Mchunu. The first Education Centre was opened in Ndwedwe in December 2010 and it was one of six multi-million rand Education Centres to be established in the province.

The Education Centres are aimed at providing resources to assist educators for development purposes and will also provide a conducive environment and facilities to conduct training programmes, workshops, etc. These Education centres have a range of fully furnished facilities which include a computer laboratory and a library with material and books relating to educator development.

The centres also have facilities that can be utilised to host training workshops and meetings. They also enable the department to cut down on costs such as booking of venues for hosting workshops as well as travel expenses for teachers. This initiative is part of a long standing partnership between the department and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN) which has provided funding for the project.

Members of the provincial legislature visited schools at the beginning of the year as part of monitoring The School Readiness Programme and uThukela was one of the districts visited by the Speaker wherein needy schools were identified for assistance with Science kits.

In collaboration with uThukela District 20 Primary and 20 secondary schools were identified. In May this year Nkonyeni and Mchunu handed over 46 science kits to needy schools in the Uthukela District through the Speaker’s Social Responsibility Programme. Tomorrow the same will be done for Ugu District.
