Official opening of phase one of the KZN children's hospital

In July 2010, the MEC for Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo launched one of the major projects in the province, that is the renovation, refurbishment and re-establishment of the old Children’s Hospital in Durban (renamed KZN Children’s Hospital).

This phased development project (comprising of four phases) is estimated at R250 million and it is a public-private collaboration which is aimed at the re-establishment of the KZN Children’s Hospital into a Specialised Provincial Children’s Hospital, that is a comprehensive paediatric and adolescent health hub for treatment, prevention and care, including rehabilitation, palliative care, psychological and social benefit support services, community outreach and training.

On the 16th of July 2013, MEC Dhlomo will officially open phase one of the KZN Children’s Hospital, which comprise of a Child Development Assessment Centre and the Regional Paediatric and Adolescent Training Centre.

Phase one of the entire project commenced in February 2012 and it involved the re-construction of the “youngest” of the 7 buildings on site, which is the old Outpatients building that was originally built in 1956. Upon completion of phase one of the entire project, the department recruited various operational staff comprising of clinical and non-clinical staff and several of this positions commenced on the 1st of June 2013.
