National Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, Gauteng MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Faith Mazibuko and their KwaZulu-Natal counterpart, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, will on Friday August 16, 2013 host a prayer meeting to seek a divine intervention on the ongoing conflict in eMatheni village, KwaNongoma.
The prayer meeting comes in the wake of an ongoing conflict between communities of Matshamhlophe, Sigubudu and eMacekaneni. The conflict, which started as dispute between two families, has escalated, affecting a number of areas and has claimed several lives and has disrupted normal life and the schooling in the areas.
Some people have fled their homes and are sleeping in the bushes. Two months ago, MEC Mchunu visited the area and addressed the parties in conflict, urging them to engage in a meaningful dialogue with a view of finding a lasting solution to their conflict. Several police have since been deployed in the area, among others, recovering a number of illegal firearms.
However, despite these initiatives by the MEC and the department’s team deployed in the area, violence and killings have persisted and this is the concern to MEC Mchunu.
