The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa, will introduce the Committee of Inquiry (previously called the Panel of Experts) as well as make public the committee’s Terms of Reference.
The committee is tasked with, inter alia, investigating the feasibility of South Africa tabling a proposal for a trade in rhino horn, or not - at the 17th Conference of Parties (CoP17) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 2016. South Africa has not taken a decision on the issue.
The Committee of Inquiry will assist and make recommendations to the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) appointed by Cabinet.
The IMC will meet as soon as the Committee of Inquiry has finalised a report for its consideration.
The Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa has invited the public and stakeholders to register to participate in the committee’s work - to ensure input is made by all interested parties, and that a range of views are canvassed.
Media are invited to a press briefing to be hosted by the Minister in Cape Town.
