Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa will, on Saturday, 20 June 2015 host the Young Women Dialogue on Climate Change in celebration of Youth Month and Environment Month in South Africa. The Dialogue will be held at the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Environmental House in Pretoria. Youth Day is celebrated on the 16th of June and World Environment Day on 5 June.
In aligning the days, Minister Molewa will be engaging the youth on environmental issues. The focus will be on climate change and sustainability and how the youth can play a role in the fight against environmental degradation.
This year, the overarching theme for the month is, ‘’Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care’’, It raises the challenge of creating inclusive opportunities for sustainable development, while stabilising the rate of resource use and reduce environmental impacts. It calls for solutions for re-engineering our consumer culture in order to create a society in which everyone has enough to live well, while respecting the planet’s regenerative capacity. WED raises a challenge to everyone to re-imagine one's dreams or aspirations for a good life in the context of more conscious and responsible consumption.
Further, 2015 marks an important milestone in the history of the United Nations with the expected adoption on the Post 2015 development agenda and initiation of negotiations toward a legally binding post 2020 global climate change agreement. It is against this context the Department of Environmental Affairs is hosting a dialogue on climate change and Post 2015 development agenda.
