The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa will, on Saturday, 22 August 2015, engage with women in meteorology and related sciences and launch MET Mbokodo Unite.
This programme was developed by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), a state-owned entity reporting to the Department of Environmental Affairs, to commence a networking and mentorship programme for women in meteorology and related sciences.
According to the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO), only 23% of professionals in the meteorology, hydrology and atmospheric science fields globally are female. MET Mbokodo Unite will therefore seek to attract more women into the meteorology and related sciences fields.
The key issues to be discussed at the launch include the attraction and retention of women in the sector; the LMaseko@environment.gov.za roadmap towards achieving gender equality and building climate resilient societies; and a mentorship programme for women in meteorology and related sciences.
