Minister Edna Molewa addresses launch of North West University Lekwena Weather Radar, 22 Mar

Minister of Environmental Affairs to attend the launch of North-West University Lekwena Weather Radar

The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Dr Edna Molewa will address the launch of the North-West University (NWU) Lekwena Weather Radar as part of the World Water Day celebration on Thursday 22 March 2018, in Potchefstroom.

The NWU, with support of the Water Research Commission and the National Research Foundation has funded the acquisition, installation and upgrade of a weather radar, situated just outside Potchefstroom on the Lekwena Farm.

This facility will provide real-time weather information to the community to stimulate education and research and narrow the gap between research and operations.

With climate change as a major concern globally and South Africa specifically, every effort should be made to monitor and understand its drivers and triggers in order to develop and implement evidence-based mitigation and adaptation strategies. The newly-acquired weather radar network provides a high-end scientific tool to study and quantify storms and precipitation in South Africa.
