Minister Barbara Creecy launches 3rd National Status of Biological Invasions, 8 Mar

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE), Ms Barbara Creecy, will, on 8 March 2024, officially launch the 3rd National Status of Biological Invasions and their Management in South Africa at the National Botanical Gardens in Pretoria

Biological invasions are a major threat to South Africa’s water security, threaten sustainable agriculture, exacerbate wildfires, and have ongoing negative impacts on the country’s unique and globally important biodiversity.

The third edition of the Bio-Invasion report will play a role in aligning South Africa with international efforts to address the negative impacts of invasive species guided by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) while supporting the implementation of the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity.

The scientific report is co-produced by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Department of Science and Innovation’s National Research Foundation’s (DSI-NRF) Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology.
