Minister Barbara Creecy to hand over waste collection and landfill management fleet in Dakotaweg, Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality on the 20 October 2022
The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Barbara Creecy, will hand over Waste Collection and Landfill Management Fleet to Dawid Kruiper, Kai! Garib and Emthanjeni Local Municipalities, on Thursday, 20 October 2022, at Dakotaweg, Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality in the ZF Mcgawu District Municipality.
This national waste management intervention addresses waste collection issues in un-serviced areas, illegal dumping and landfill operations in selected municipalities across all provinces.
Due to insufficient budgets, most local municipalities are facing severe challenges with waste collection services. As a result, some residents and businesses dump waste in open spaces, resulting in illegal dumps. Waste disposal facilities, in most municipalities, are also experiencing serious non-compliance as waste is not managed correctly due to a lack of fleet and equipment. In an attempt to assist the municipalities, the Department in 2018/19 engaged with the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and the National Treasury to enable municipalities to procure waste collection and landfill operation vehicles through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG).
Minister Creecy will also embark on a Good Green Deeds clean-up and plant indigenous trees towards the Ten Million Trees campaign that contributes to the Trillion Trees entitative led by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).
The Mayors of Dawid Kruiper, Kai Garib and Emthanjeni Local Municipalities will join the Minister for the handover of the fleet, illegal dump site clean-up and tree planting activities.
