2015 SGB elections road show
The Minister for Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, MP and the MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, MPL, are going to embark on a roadshow/launch of the 2015 School Governing Body Elections at Madadeni FET College Sports Ground tomorrow, 17 February 2015.
School Governing Bodies (SGBs) were created to advance the democratic transformation of the schooling system and provide a platform for active participation of school communities in the decentralized decision making process.
KZN SGB elections are among the largest elections when considering that more than 6000 schools in the province will become voting stations. School principals have been appointed by the Head of Department as Schools Electoral Officers in schools where they are not employed. This is to ensure that elections are free and fair. Training of Schools Electoral Officers is conducted at district level based on the information contained in the provincial notices. Schools Electoral Teams are then appointed to assist Schools Electoral Officers during these elections.
The launch of SGB elections targets parents, officials, SGB Associations, Teacher Unions, Members of Education Portfolio Committee, IEC as well as members of the media. The provincial event is then followed by a district roll out plans where each of the 12 districts invites similar stakeholders to create awareness on the SGB elections. The main aim of the advocacy campaign is to outline what are the qualities of a person who can participate in the elections.
NB: These elections will take place from the 6th to the 28th of March 2015.
Members of the media are invited to attend the launch.
