KZN rolls out integrated healthy lifestyle programme
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation, Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha will be handing over an outdoor gym in Nhlalakahle Township in Greytown tomorrow as part of the roll out of the integrated healthy lifestyle programme in the province.
The outdoor gyms are built in open parks for communities to conduct regular exercises at no cost.
Over the past three years, the Department has rolled out 33 Outdoor Gyms in local municipalities. In 2015/16 the Department will roll-out a further 11 Outdoor Gyms (Fitness Parks) in each of the 11 Districts at a cost of R8,2 million.
The Department has identified Fitness coaches and instructors who implement the programme at a community level. Each fitness coach forms a Fitness Club at ward level and conduct exercise programmes including aerobic classes at no cost to communities.
“This programme will go a long way towards reducing the high prevalence of life-style diseases in our country. Our goal is to increase the number of people who participate in regular physical activity by 2019,” said Sibhidla-Saphetha.
The Greytown event will take place as follows:
Date: 3 July 2015
Venue: Nhlalakahle Township Outdoor Gym (near the clinic)
Time: 7am for aerobics (official handover of the gym at 8am)
