The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Neliswa Peggy Nkonyeni, and Professor Marry Metcalf, are going to preside over the provincial launch of the Provincial Initiative to Improve Learning Outcomes (PILO) and the Jika Imfundo Project on 19 August 2014. PILO is a radical education transformation initiative and teacher development strategy focusing on developing strong curriculum management skills to strengthen district support to teaching and learning in line with the aims and objectives of schooling 2015.
“This ground breaking pilot project has started in uThungulu and Pinetown Districts and will be replicated in all districts by the end of the MTEF. Similarly, Jika imfundo will utilize the ex Dokkies facility and all education centres to improve districts capacity and provide ongoing teacher development and support,” said MEC Nkonyeni during her budget speech presentation.
In December 2012, the Premier of KZN, Senzo Mchunu, when he was the MEC for Education, signed a Memorandum of Understanding declaring the intention of the province to establish the KZN Initiative to Improve learning Outcome (KZNILLO). On the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding, work begun in 2013 on refining the design at provincial level and on implementation
in the uThungulu and Pinetown Districts. On the basis of the progress made, the HOD, Nkosinathi SP Sishi (PhD) in September signed a Memorandum of Understanding which covered governance and management and funding arrangements for progressive implementation.
