KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Social Development, Mrs Weziwe Thusi, will on Saturday launch a massive campaign aimed at easing the burden of needy children and families.
Dubbed “Sponsor a child sponsor a family campaign,” the initiative is aimed at mobilising the society to contribute towards rebuilding of the family structure through giving to vulnerable children and families in the province, with much emphasis on educational needs.
The department will be forming partnerships with all interested parties such as district municipalities, political leaders, traditional leaders, business sector, non governmental organisations and community members to buy into the campaign. Sponsorship may be in a form of buying school uniform, paying tuition fees, providing families with food, clothes and shelter etc.
KwaZulu-Natal is the second largest populated province in South Africa, with the majority being the youth and 42 percent of which are children and youth under the age of 19 years. Most families live in abject poverty due to high levels of unemployment.
The campaign, which is MEC Thusi’s brainchild, is targeting children in households with unemployed parents or guardians, child and youth-headed households and children who are out of foster care.
