In yet another blow to the indignity and the squalid conditions associated with living in an informal settlement, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu will tomorrow Friday, 5 September 2014 mark his 100 days in office with the hand-over of houses that are part of a R274 million informal settlement upgrade at two housing projects in Groutville, KwaDukuza Municipality on the North Coast.
Premier Mchunu will be accompanied by Human Settlement and Public Works MEC Ravigasen Pillay, MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Saphetha, iLembe District Municipality Deputy Mayor Cllr M. Shandu and KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Ricardo Mthembu.
The Groutville Priority 2 Informal Settlement Upgrade Project in Ward 11’s eTsheni and Njekani areas of Groutville will see a yield of almost 2 000 units, while the Groutville Priority 5 in Ward 9‘s Mnyundwini area will see a yield of 1 000 units.
Both projects are set to benefit 3 000 people who have been living in shacks with no proper sanitation and water as well as electricity.
The two priority projects will have electricity, water and sanitation thus restoring the dignity of the end user beneficiaries.
As part of the slums clearance campaign, Premier committed that within 100 days of him assuming office, the Provincial Government would hand over 50 completed housing units in the Groutville Informal Settlement Priority Housing Projects in Wards 9 and 12 of KwaDukuza Municipality.
The Premier and his delegation will hand over two houses at both Wards and thereafter address the broader Groutville Community at a community event at the nearby Chief Albert Luthuli Sports Ground.
Members of the media are invited to cover this milestone event in the Provincial Government’s Slums Clearance and Informal Settlement Upgrade Programme.
