KZN MPLs to honour Madiba in a special way

In celebrating the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, members of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature will honour him by visiting the province’s orphaned and vulnerable children which is a sector of the society that is very close to him.

Mandela Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated on the 18th of July (Mandela's birthday). The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.

Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact.

Members of the Provincial Legislature, led by Speaker Peggy Nkonyeni, accompanied by the MECs will be dispatched throughout the province visiting youth care centres and children’s homes identified with the help of the provincial department of social development.

In each of these centres, MPLs will spend 67 minutes in honour of South Africa’s most celebrated statesman who is recuperating at a Pretoria heart hospital.

“This is a gesture in support of our former President Nelson Mandela’s dedication to humanity and our commitment to sustain his legacy of compassion,” said Nkonyeni.

MPLs have been urged to bring presents to the children such as toys, sanitary towels, books and other items to make their visit a memorable day for the children.

KZN Legislature Members will do their Mandela Day on 16 and 17 so that they will be free to join other national and provincial activities to honour Tata Mandela on the exact day, 18 July.
