KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation hosts Women in Sport Symposium, 7 to 8 Mar

KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation hosts women in Sport Symposium

In a major step forward in the promotion of the role of women in sport, the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Sport and Recreation (KZNDSR) will, from 7 - 8 March, host a ground-breaking seminar which will see administrators, coaches and athletes chart new ways to take women’s sport to new heights.

Women’s participation in sport has a history marked by gender discrimination, but also filled with major achievements by female athletes, who against all odds, have managed to advance gender equity and ensure empowerment of women and young girls. Former Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini will be one of the keynote speakers.

The 2014 KZN Women in Sport Symposium gives women a platform once again to celebrate their achievements and come up with plans to address the many challenges they face. The gathering will also seek to formulate a strategy for women in the sporting field to bring positive change in their communities and the country.

The main objectives of this symposium will be to influence policies, priorities and strategies to implement change within the sporting fraternity in KZN.

The symposium will focus on:

  • creating awareness that sport activities are fundamental to ensure physical wellbeing and mental health for women.
  • increasing women participation and involvement in physical activities and sport organisations.
  • striving for equal opportunities for women to participate in major sport competitions games.
  • publicising the achievement of women athletes.
  • organising educational activities in relation to women and sport to address specific needs of women in sport.
  • increasing the number of women in coaching and other key decision making positions.

All media is invited to be part of the sporting change, as women make the difference in the game. Join Honourable MEC of Sport, Mrs Ntombikayise Sibhidla-Sapheta who has selected various inspirational women to present and facilitate the discussions. The venue will be Coastlands on the Ridge, 319 Peter Mokaba Ridge, Durban starting at 08h00.
