KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu declares war on water leaks

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu invites members of the media to the launch of the War on Water Leaks Campaign in KwaMashu Township, outside Durban tomorrow, 26 August 2014.

The Premier will be accompanied by the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Mayor of eThekwini Municipality Cllr James Nxumalo.

“In my inauguration speech I made a commitment to visit the INK Area (Inanda, Ntuzuma and KwaMashu) within 100 days in office because of high levels of water leaks.”

“In the INK area alone there is a water loss of between 45% and 82%. This has resulted in water shortages affecting many communities. The Water and Research Commission show that more than 50 percent of purified pipe water supplies go to waste in most KwaZulu-Natal municipalities, largely from burst pipes and leakages, thefts or other unauthorised use such as illegal connections.”

Members of the media are requested to meet at the INK offices, E Section KwaMashu at 9h00 tomorrow, 26 August 2014.

Other details are as follows:-

1. 9h25 – 9h50: Premier, MEC and Mayor inspect the illegal connections and water leaks at Lozane Road Lot 1385 and 1384. The Premier will then proceed to install a water meter after the disconnection of an illegal connection (regularization).

2. 9h50 – 9h55:   Media interviews on site

3. 9h55 – 10h00:   Premier, MEC and Mayor depart to Ntuzuma B Community Hall (Ward 38) the venue for the launch of the War on Water Leaks Campaign
