International High School moot Court Competition at The Hague 19 January – 25 January 2014

Two learners from KwaZulu-Natal are going to participate in the 2014 High School International Competition in the Netherlands. Tharin Pillay and Caton Schutte (both from Crawford College in the Pinetown District), excelled in the 3rd National Schools Moot Court Competition.

The High School International Competition will be offered for the second year by the Justice Resource Center (JRC), in partnership with the City Hall of The Hague. The Competition gives high school students an extraordinary opportunity to engage in civic education with other students and judicial leaders from around the world.

These learners have been invited to compete against 15 other international teams, including, but not limited to; New York; The Hague, Netherlands; Warsaw, Gdynia, Poland; St. Petersburg, Russia; Caracas, Venezuela and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The High School International Moot Court competition is an opportunity for students to learn about the rule of law, gain a better understanding of international relations and increase their legal knowledge.

"We have organized a workshop with excellent coaches and we are positive that our learners will excel with the assistance received. The workshop was offered from 7 January – 10 January 2014 at the University of Pretoria," said Sthoko Shange, the Provincial Coordinator.

The learners will participate in multiple-elimination rounds at Leiden University, The Hague, with two international teams emerging as finalists. The final round will take place at the Peace Palace in The Hague with prominent judges from the International Criminal Court (ICC) and International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICYT) presiding. The case will focus on "Blood Diamonds" using the ICC rules and laws.
