KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture hosts Umkhosi Wamaganu ceremony, 1 Feb

It's all systems go for Umkhosi Wamaganu in Ngwavuma

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela says it is all systems go for Umkhosi Wamaganu the first fruits ceremony that will take place this coming weekend in eMachobeni Royal Palace in Ngwavuma north of the province.

“It is our mandate as Arts and Culture department to observe, promote and support heritage including royal ceremonies”, said MEC Mavimbela.

MEC Mavimbela has challenged all people to take time and learn each other’s heritage and culture, as in that way social cohesion will be accomplished.

The annual uMkhosi Wamaganu in Ngwavuma attracts even people from beyond the borders of South Africa and KZN like neighboring countries including Kingdom of eSwatini and Mozambique who also practice the same cultural ceremony.

Isilo King Goodwill will take the first sip of the traditional drink made from marula fruit before declaring it opened for consumption responsibly.

The ceremony is also used as a ritual to pray and thank Mother Nature in anticipation for a great harvest.

The king also uses the platform to warn people about global warming and its harsh effects as some of the terrible weather conditions and deforestation are as a result human behavior.
