The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to host workshop on 30x30 Protected Areas implementation

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment will host a consultative workshop on the implementation of the 30 x 30 Protected Areas, Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), on 6 - 8 June 2023, in Boksburg, Gauteng.

South Africa, as a party to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD), is a signatory to the Framework which consists of four goals and 23 action targets. Target 3 calls for 30 percent of the world’s terrestrial and coastal and marine areas to be in effective protection and management by 2030. In South Africa, the GBF will be implemented within the four goals of the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity, namely conservation, sustainable use, fair and equitable sharing of benefits as well as transformation. 

The three-day event is aims to explore and identify opportunities for area expansion in the marine and terrestrial realms; develop an action for the achievement of 30x30 and identify the finance needs and gaps for the expansion.
