Environmental Affairs hosts SA Agulhas II open day, 9 Jun

SA Agulhas II open day to be held in Durban

The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) will host its annual SA Agulhas II Open Day on 09 June 2018 in Durban.

The SA Agulhas II Open Day gives members of the public an opportunity to explore the vessel and learn about the Department's work in the ocean and coastal environment.

The SA Agulhas II is the DEA’s flagship research vessel. She was built in 2012 and II was designed to be an ice-breaking scientific research vessel and to supply South African research stations in the Antarctic and to Marion and Gough Islands.

The Open Day convenes in the wake of World Oceans Day which is celebrated annually on 08 June. This year, South Africa celebrates World Oceans Day under the theme Preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean.

A media tour will be held aboard the vessel as per the details below:

Date: Friday, 08 June 2018
Time: 10:30 for 11:00
Venue: Port of Durban, N-Shed

Members of the media will be shuttled from Old Drive-In, Stamford Hill, Durban, 4001 to the vessel as no cars or walk-ins are permitted at the Port.
