United Nations AIDS Executive Director and Deputy President of Republic of South Africa to address media in KwaZulu-Natal
The UNAIDS Executive Director, Mr Michel Sidibé will launch Operation Sukuma Sakhe best practices publication and the 2012 HIV Estimates Country Report on the 17th January 2014 at Kwa-Mashu Indoor Sports Centre, Durban, South Africa.
The launch will be attended by the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, National Minister of Health Dr Aaron Mostoaledi and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier Senzo Mchunu.
Operation Sukuma Sakhe (Let us stand up and Build) is the campaign launched by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government as part of efforts aimed at mobilizing the people of KZN to be at the forefront of all efforts aimed at speeding up service delivery, eradicating poverty and ensuring food security, fighting social ills such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and turning the tide against HIV and AIDS pandemic.
Although KZN has been known as the epicentre of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, there are signs that the battle is being won. The achievements are as a result of the added value created by the multiple stakeholder participation in the Provincial Council on AIDS that directs all sectors of society to unite their energies through Operation Masisukume Sakhe involving Government at all levels, ordinary members of community, civil society including business, labour, churches, traditional leadership and many other stakeholders.
Media is invited to attend the launch of this document and for a visit to a Sukuma Sakhe War Room to witness what the rest of South Africa – and indeed the African continent–can learn from this best practice multi-sectoral service delivery model.
