Deputy Minister Obed Bapela attends Kings Fun Walk during Heritage Month, 11 Sept

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bapela would be attending for the second time the 25 Kilometres Kings Fun Walk on Friday the 11 September 2015.

The Fun Walk would be followed by the centuries old tradition of Musangwe, a form of bare-knuckle boxing that helps young men cope with present-day challenges and builds courage amongst young man and to prepare them for challenges ahead of them in life. The age-old sport of bare-fist fighting, popularly known as Musangwe in Venda, has been used to gauge the bravery.

“Most of the fighters have the potential to make it in boxing and some of the well know boxer from Venda started through this cultural practice and there is hope that in the near future there will soon be a world champion from this area,” he said Bapela.

The Deputy Minister further stated that "Traditional Leadership have heeded the call from the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) to grow the economy and create jobs to better the lives of all South Africans, in this regard there are several examples of Traditional Leaders who have projects to uplift their communities."

The Deputy Minister also wishes to encourage the people of South Africa that during this Month of September, as we celebrate Heritage Month lets proud ourselves of our diverse cultures under the theme "Our Tradition - Our Pride" - Siyazigabisa nga masiko wethu - Reya ikgantsha ka meetlo ya Rona”.

The event was last year attended by more than 2 000 spectators at the Royal Gardens picnic site in Mutoti village, near Thohoyandou in Limpopo. King Ramabulana has vowed to make the sport an annual affair, to be held during September, the Heritage Month.
